Is ATV riding covered?

1Cover policies exclude cover when riding an all-terrain vehicle or quad bike, either as the person in control or as a pillion passenger. This is a General Exclusion in our PDS.

If you are going to ride a quad bike or ATV, here are some safety tips:

  • wear a helmet

Whether or not its compulsory to wear one, you should always wear a helmet when riding an ATV. Bike flips are a common cause of injury so, at a minimum, a helmet can reduce your risk of a serious brain injury. A helmet can mean the difference between a minor or catastrophic injury.

  • Choose wisely

Ensure you rent your vehicle from a reputable, licenced commercial operator who is required complete relevant safety checks and provide you with appropriate training.

  • Be streetsmart

Regardless of your experience, anyone can experience a road accident. Always use common sense and avoid risk taking behaviour while riding any type of vehicle abroad.

  • Know the rules

Regardless of what type of vehicle you choose to ride, make sure you know the local rules and regulations. Always stay alert and aware when riding in an unknown area and keep vigilant for risky-riders and dangerous terrain.

  • Make sure you're licenced

The rules may be different abroad, but you must always be licensed in order to ride certain types of vehicles. To ride legally overseas you may require a licence valid for the same class of vehicle you're intending to hire, accompanied with an international driver's permit.

  • Get Travel Insurance

Don’t assume that your policy covers you for riding a quad bike, moped or motorbike automatically. The majority of travel insurers do not cover quad bike or ATV’s. Be clear as to whether you are covered before taking on any thrill-seeking activities. Always ensure you've got cover to protect yourself and your loved ones on holiday.

Terms and conditions, limits and exclusions apply. Please see the PDS for full details.
